FOCUS ON RESILIENCE FACTORS

Sense of Belonging

Impact of Trauma

  1. Traumatic experiences come with isolation and disconnection.  This experience is terrifying and we are left with a body memory that lives on the central nervous system.   The central nervous system allows us to experience the here and now.  When the body memory is triggered, the experience from the past takes over the here and now and we experience the past as alive in the present: a flashback.

  2. Body trauma memories live in the central nervous system which makes boredom a trauma trigger. Boredom is a central nervous system with nothing to do- therefore the trauma memory will begin to play.

  3. The person experiencing this will have no idea this is a memory from the past- they will experience body sensations as if the danger is present in this moment.

    1. Being alone for extended periods of time, boredom, lack of meaning or purpose and social isolation are all trauma triggers.

The Antidote

  1. Facilitate experiences of belonging and connection!  Most people have plans that their providers follow….but what about a path to walk on that is organized by your passions and purpose instead of your pathologies?!?!?  ;)

  2. Help folks understand who they are, what they love and then connect to other people and places that love those same things.

  3. Create spaces and interactions where folks can discover their gifts and contribute those gifts to their families, communities and other social groups
