FOCUS ON RESILIENCE FACTORS

Repeated Failed Foster Placements

Impact of Trauma

  1. When you live in a traumatic, violent environment, truth is whatever the perp needs it to be to accomplish whatever the perp is trying to achieve.  This creates a situation where ones reality is not allowed to be real, therefore, the part of the brain that can differentiate between a truth and a lie never develops.

  2. One in this environment will create fantasy or cling to people or objects (EXTERNAL SUPPORTS) to create and ground themselves in a reality they need to survive.  Later on in life this will LOOK LIKE: lying, possessiveness, stealing, cheating and manipulation.

  3. THESE ARE ALL SURVIVAL SKILLS and should be understood as such.

The Antidote

  1. Build in more external supports in the persons life!  What are those things/experiences/pets/plants/sense of spirituality where one can find safety outside of or in between times with a safe adult?

  2. Understand the persons external supports currently and build on those instead of shame them- reframe the distraction as a passion!
